Requirements and Interview Process

All Resident Physician I (RPI) positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Application materials are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), via the Dean's Office of the applicant's medical school. We accept application only through ERAS.

A complete application file consists of:

  1. an ERAS application (Common Application Form/CAF)
  2. a personal statement
  3. at least three letters of recommendation (from Ob-Gyn, Surgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, etc.)
  4. the Dean's letter (MSPE) and transcripts
  5. USMLE scores - REQUIRED - All exams must be passed on the first attempt. Current residents in our program averaged 226 on Step I. Step II must be completed and the score provided before the NRMP match.

While our deadline is November 15, it is best to have your application completed as early as possible, as our interview slots fill quite rapidly after ERAS opens for transmittal. Interviews are by invitation only — we regret that we must limit the number of interviews granted, but the large number of applicants necessitates this policy.

After receipt of a complete application as noted above, the Residency Review Committee will review your application. Interviews are offered on the basis of the committee's recommendations. You will be contacted by e-mail or phone regarding your application status. Interview dates for academic year 2010/2011 are:

  • Wednesday, November 18, 2009
  • Saturday, November 21, 2009
  • Wednesday, December 2, 2009
  • Saturday, December 5, 2009
  • Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Twelve applicants are scheduled for each interview day. Each group of applicants will be given an overall introduction to the program and will interview individually with the chairman, program director, two additional faculty, and a resident. Applicants will also have the opportunity to tour the medical center campus with residents.

International medical graduates must have passed all appropriate examinations and be approved by the Medical Board of California to begin postgraduate medical education in this state prior to application. UCSD Medical Center Terms and Conditions of Appointment includes the following policy:

Noncitizens of this country may pursue residency and fellowship training at UCSD Medical Center while holding permanent resident status or while holding a J exchange visitor visa under the sponsorship of the ECFMG. UCSD policy reflects that graduate medical education training is not completed by individuals who hold an H visa. An exception to this policy may be requested by the UCSD GME training program director for an applicant who is in the USA under an H visa at the time of application to the UCSD GME program.

Applicants who are currently a Resident Physician I (RPI) in another specialty are generally considered only for RP I positions in this program, and generally only through the NRMP. Applicants for RPII - IV positions will be considered if positions are available. In addition to the required documents noted above, RPII - IV applicants must provide a letter from each residency program attended.

Immediately upon completion of the RPI year, all residents are expected to apply for and obtain a State of California Physician and Surgeon License. All three steps of the USMLE must be successfully passed prior to licensure. Completing this process is the responsibility of the resident.
