Salary and Benefits

The salary scale for the year 2009–2010 is:

  • Resident Physician I: $47,166
  • Resident Physician II: $48,816
  • Resident Physician III: $50,715
  • Resident Physician IV: $52,670
House officers are eligible for enrollment in the UCSD Housestaff health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance plans. There is no premium charge to the house officer for the cost of enrollment in the health, dental, and vision plans either for him/herself, for a spouse, for dependent children or for a domestic same or opposite sex partner. There is no premium charge to the house officer for enrollment in either the life or disability plans. Malpractice insurance is provided by the University at no cost as well.

A computerized allowance to cover on-call meal expenses, lab coats, and laundering of coats are provided to all residents. As graduate students of the University, residents also have inexpensive access to recreational facilities on the UCSD campus and at the Mission Bay Aquatics Center.

Housing in San Diego is readily available with choices ranging from residential areas with small town appeal and excellent schools to lofts in the Gaslamp Quarter to condos at the beaches. Monthly rents (depending on the location and amenities) generally range in price from $800 to $1,800 for one to two bedroom units.

Each resident receives four weeks of paid vacation yearly which can be taken anytime (depending on scheduling requirements) throughout the year.
